Pinterest for Etsy Sellers: How to Get Traffic to Your Listings

Etsy shoppers search by product name. Pinterest users search by idea, occasion and style. That gap is your opportunity: one listing can show up in many searches that never mention your shop.

Short answer: Pinterest works well for Etsy shops because people use it to plan gifts, rooms, parties and projects before they buy. Start with your five best listings, make several different pins for each one, write every pin around a phrase people really search, send each pin to the matching listing and publish over several weeks. Pin Magic Studio makes the pin designs fast, so your time goes into photos, keywords and checking the result.

Why Pinterest suits Etsy shops

Etsy is a marketplace: people arrive knowing roughly what they want. Pinterest is a visual search engine: people arrive with a vague idea ("boho nursery", "gift for a coffee lover", "rustic wedding favours") and look for inspiration. A handmade or personalised product fits that mood well.

  • You reach people earlier. A pin can introduce your product while someone is still deciding what they want.
  • Pins last. A pin can keep getting seen for a long time, unlike a social post that disappears in a day. Read how Pinterest traffic works for the long-game view.
  • You already have the material. Listing photos, tags and titles are most of what a pin needs.
  • You do not need a big following. Search drives most discovery, so a new shop can be found by the right phrase.

Results vary a lot by niche, season and photo quality, and nobody can promise traffic. What you can do is give each listing a fair number of chances to be found. See the Pinterest marketing strategy guide for how this fits into a wider plan.

Set up Pinterest for your shop

  1. Use a business account. It is free and gives you analytics. New to the platform? Start with Pinterest for beginners.
  2. Name the profile for what you make. "Maple & Thread | Personalised Leather Gifts" beats "Maple & Thread Studio".
  3. Write a bio in plain words. Say what you make and who it is for. The bio generator can give you a first draft.
  4. Claim your website if you have one. A shop on your own domain can be claimed in Pinterest. Claiming an Etsy shop itself has not always been available: Pinterest community threads report the Etsy option disappearing in 2022. Check Pinterest's current help pages, because this changes. Pins link to your Etsy listings either way.
TipIf you have a blog or simple website next to your Etsy shop, claim it and publish gift guides or "how to" posts there. Those pages give you more to pin and more search phrases to target. See how to make money on Pinterest.

Turn Etsy tags into Pinterest keywords

Your Etsy tags are a good start, but they describe the product. Pinterest searches describe the idea around it. Take each tag and ask: who is it for, what is the occasion, which room or style does it suit?

Etsy tag or titlePinterest angles to test
personalised leather walletgroomsmen gift ideas, anniversary gift for him, minimalist everyday carry
hand-poured soy candlecozy bedroom decor, housewarming gift ideas, self-care gift basket
custom pet portraitgift for dog lovers, memorial gift ideas, pet loss keepsake
printable wedding signdiy wedding decor on a budget, rustic wedding signs, welcome sign ideas

Then check each phrase in Pinterest search: type it in and look at the autocomplete suggestions. The Pinterest keyword generator gives you related phrases to compare, and our keyword research guide shows how to build a list in about an hour. Keep the list in a sheet with one row per listing.

Boards for an Etsy shop

Boards tell Pinterest what your account is about. A common mistake is a board for every single product. Group by what a shopper is thinking about instead:

Board typeExampleWhat goes on it
Product typePersonalised Leather GiftsYour pins for that category
OccasionGroomsmen Gift IdeasYour pins plus a few relevant pins from others
Style or roomCozy Bedroom Decor IdeasYour pins and inspiration that matches your style

Name boards with a real search phrase and fill in the description. The board name generator and board description generator help with the wording, and how to organize pinterest boards explains how to keep them tidy as you grow.

Pins that work for Etsy products

One listing can support many pins, as long as each pin looks different and speaks to a different search. Here are five types to rotate through.

Pin typeImageExample headline

LifestyleProduct being used or styledEveryday Carry for Minimalists
GiftProduct wrapped or framed for a personGroomsmen Gift Ideas He Will Keep

Use your own photos. Do not pin other sellers' images. Make sure the pin is 2:3 and readable on a phone (see Pinterest pin size), and only add a price or discount to the image if it is true and will stay true. Prices baked into an image go stale quickly.

Pinterest wants fresh, varied pins, not the same picture with new words. Our guide to fresh pins explains what counts, and AI and template pin design for ecommerce shows how to produce enough variety for a catalog.

Write titles and descriptions for search

  • Title: put the main phrase first and keep it under 100 characters. "Personalised Leather Wallet for Groomsmen Gifts" is better than "Handmade Item 24".
  • Description: two or three plain sentences about who it helps, with the phrase used naturally. Keep it under 500 characters to be safe.
  • Alt text and file names: describe the image honestly.
  • Hashtags: optional and low impact. See Pinterest hashtags before you spend time on them.

The free title generator and description generator give you drafts to edit. They use rules and a built-in knowledge base rather than AI, so results are fast and predictable, but they still need your edit. Read Pinterest SEO for the full approach.

Plan around seasons and gifting

Many Etsy categories are seasonal: Christmas, Mother's Day, weddings, back to school. Pinterest users plan early, so start pinning well before the peak. Six to eight weeks ahead is a common rule of thumb.

  1. Use Pinterest Trends and search autocomplete to see when interest in your phrases rises.
  2. List your seasonal listings and the date each season peaks.
  3. Count back six to eight weeks and start publishing then.
  4. Keep a few evergreen pins going all year for products that sell any time.

The monthly content planning guide has a ready-made calendar, and Seasonal Blog Content and Pins covers launch timing in more detail.

A simple four-week plan for your best sellers

You do not need to pin the whole shop. Start with five listings, make five different pins for each, and spread them out.

ItemNumberNotes
Best-selling listings5Pick by sales, margin or how well the photos look
Pins per listing5Different photo, headline and angle each time
Total pins255 x 5
Pins per week over 4 weeksAbout 625 divided by 4, rounded up

This is planning arithmetic, not a performance promise. After a month, look at which pins earned saves and outbound clicks and make more in that style. If you want a schedule, see how often to post on Pinterest; there is no official magic number.

Make the pins faster with Pin Magic Studio

Designing 25 pins by hand takes most of a weekend. Pin Magic Studio reads a link you paste and gives you 10+ pin designs built from 100+ templates. You can change colours, fonts and photos, then export 1000 x 1500 PNG files.

  1. Open one listing page and copy its link.
  2. Paste it into Studio and look at what it picked up. Check the headline and the photo.
  3. Swap in your best listing photos, your shop colours and your fonts.
  4. Keep the five most different designs and export them.
  5. Write titles and descriptions, choose boards, and publish.
Be honest with yourselfPin Magic does not connect to your Etsy shop. You paste individual links, and you can always upload your own photos. Test one listing first to see what Studio pulls in. For publishing, use Pinterest's own scheduler or any scheduler you like. See how to batch upload pins and how to create pins with AI for the full workflow.

Shops with their own website and blog can also use the Pin Magic extension to create blog images; see pricing for what each plan includes.

Measure what is working

  • Pinterest Analytics: impressions, saves and outbound clicks per pin. Saves show interest; outbound clicks show intent.
  • Etsy Stats: traffic sources and visits per listing. Look for visits from Pinterest.
  • Sales: compare views with orders. If a listing gets clicks but no orders, fix the listing (photos, price, shipping), not the pin.

Review once a month. Make five new pins for each listing that is working and retire angles that never get clicks. Attribution is imperfect, so treat numbers as a guide. More on measurement in Pinterest traffic.

Common mistakes

  • One pin per listing, then nothing.
  • Posting the same image with different words.
  • Pinning 30 pins in one afternoon and then disappearing for a month.
  • Using generic Etsy-style titles instead of real search phrases.
  • Sending every pin to the shop home page instead of the matching listing.
  • Pinning before your listing photos and titles are good.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pinterest good for Etsy sellers?

It can be, especially for visual products and gifts, because shoppers plan on Pinterest before they buy. It rewards steady, varied pins over time, so it is a slow channel rather than a quick win.

Can I claim my Etsy shop on Pinterest?

The option to claim an Etsy shop has not always been available, and Pinterest community threads report it going missing in 2022. If you have your own website, claim that. Check Pinterest's current help pages for the latest steps.

How many pins should I make per Etsy listing?

There is no official number. A good start is three to five clearly different pins for each best seller, spread over several weeks.

Should my Pinterest keywords match my Etsy tags?

Use your tags as a starting point, then check each phrase in Pinterest search and autocomplete. Pinterest phrases are usually about ideas and occasions rather than product names.

Do I need a scheduler?

No. Pinterest has its own scheduling. A third-party scheduler can help with larger volumes. Pin Magic creates the pins and works with either.

Can Pin Magic read my Etsy shop automatically?

No. Pin Magic Studio works from a link you paste, and you can upload your own photos. Test one listing link first to see what it picks up.

Start with your five best sellers

Pick the listings that already sell, build five pins for each, and publish them over a month. Then keep the ones that earn clicks. If your shop sits inside a bigger store, read Pinterest for Shopify as well, and compare plans on the pricing page.
